The nose is not only crucial for the facial appearance, but has also important physiological functions regarding primarily the breathing, the sense of smell and the voice sound. The rhinology, as this branch of medical science is called, includes the treatment of impairments of these functions and generally of all diseases affecting the nose and the sinuses.
Endoscopic Examination in Rhinology
The endoscopic examination helps verify previous findings and establish diagnoses, since it enables the physician to perform a visual inspection of otherwise inaccessible areas, such as the small nasal cavity, the nasal and pharyngeal tract and the openings to the paranasal sinuses. Generally, an endoscopic examination produces relatively reliable findings, even prior to the use of costly and sophisticated imaging techniques, such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Even if the patient may perceive the endoscopic examination of the nose as unpleasant, it is one of the minimally invasive and safest diagnostic procedures.
